Thoughts and questions

First, hello!

I think Dive is a great idea with lots of promise, but I have a lot of questions and my thoughts may not be laid out well so bear with me.

I am curious if anyone with a Dive has tested streaming some Rift software such with streamer such as Kainy or Splashtop.
I am most interested in Riftmax Cinema, software you can run for free on the PC - a multiplayer video cinema! I would mostly use the Dive or this, watching 3D movies possible with friends. For this type of software, latency is no issue since you are purely viewing.

Also, if you have used GoShow and Riftmax, how do they compare? GoShow looks great for a new app, but Riftmax is highly polished already and with a load more features.

And a final concern about the Dive... I went to purchase today but the price in USD is ~$72 and shows an estimated ship date of 12/17... not to mention going through customs. I'm worried the price is a little high considering the parts, not unreasonably high but a tad expensive. Furthermore there are competitors coming out for Dive such as OpenLoop and vRase, maybe others?

I think for the time being I will wait until the Dive can ship right after I order it - who knows maybe by 12/17 a competitor will be closer to release with a better price? Either way I'm very excited about the future of enjoying VR media, and with products like Dive its coming that much faster.

Definately the apps are still not many. But with the Dive available I think thats going to change. Now is the time for all the Rift Developers to convert their content to the smartphones with our plugin. That way their content can reach more people!
A competitor before 12/17 ? I would not bet on it.

Most of the Rift apps could not possibly run on mobile hardware due to processor, graphics, and memory requirements.

I have to say, I believe you are making a mistake in relying on the phone hardware to produce the 3d content. It will be a long time before mobile hardware is able to produce high polygon count 3D content at a high frame rate suitable for a complex immerse experience. Additionally, relying on developers to port the apps they have already developed for the rift is a terrible way to grow an ecosystem.

A more successful strategy would be to use the mobile device as a display for PC-generated content using existing solutions like Splashtop, TeamViewer and many others. Even better would be to develop a custom PC-to-Mobile pipeline using the open source VNC.

Advantages:
1. Much more powerful processing on the PC will allow for faster, higher resolution, more complex VR applications on the Dive.
2. No storage limitations as with phone.
3. Tons of existing content developed for the Rift is instantly available for the Dive, no need to require additional efforts by the devs. This includes AAA level gaming from developers like Steam. All that's needed is an interface app to convert and scale Rift apps to Dive requirements and transfer positional tracking data from the mobile device to the PC and feed it to the Rift app.
3. Reduction in "competitive" positions of Rift/Dive software. You can see many real world examples that show developers have to allocate their resources wisely and simply will not duplicate development to a platform with small market share. As it is now the Dive ecosystem could be dead before it even starts.

A very low latency and response (ideal <= 20 ms) is the most important thing for a good virtual reality experience and to avoid sickness.
I don't think this will work well today because it will have to send the input to the pc who is rendering the images and send them back via network to the smartphone who needs to show them on the display.
But it would be wonderful if this worked well with a fast response :D

This is certainly possible with hardware-level initiatives by the graphics card manufacturers, specifically Nvidia Shield GameStream and GeForce Experience. Both are real products being currently marketed specifically to stream PC gaming to mobile devices.

There's even already an open source project to take advantage of GeForce Experience, Limelight.

And existing software for sale with it's own proprietary solution, see demo videos in this thread
