Seeing double!

Seeing double!

Recently got my Dive and I'm pretty pleased with my first taste of virtual reality. The sense of 3D, scale, and immersion 'The Height' provides really does take gaming to the next level. Even though I use an iPhone 5 with its below 720p resolution the sharpness and clarity of the image is way better than I expected. And the 'screen door' effect is barely noticeable if you're not looking for it. All in all, I'm impressed!

But there is a problem! When I remove the Dive I have a bad case of double vision! For 30 to 60 mins I can see two of everything! At first I thought this was down to not having accurately aligned the lenses to my eyes but it seems no matter how much I adjust the depth and Interpupillary distance the outcome is the same.

I have a cataract in my left eye which means the sight in that eye is different to the right in that my right eye naturally can't focus close up but my left eye can (with somewhat misty vision) and my right eye focuses sharply on distant objects while my left eye doesn't. Accordingly I have to set each lens in the Dive at an individual distance to get a uniformly sharp image. Despite the misty vision of my left eye this works and everything is fine - until I remove the Dive!

I'm just wondering, is this unique to me (and my cataract problem) or do other people have cross-eyed vision after using the Dive? I've read of people feeing sick and nauseous from the Oculus Rift but I've never yet read of anyone having double vision!

I'm hoping in time my sight (and brain) adapts to the Dive but I'm thinking maybe I need to join the NHS queue for cataract removal.

I have a theory as to why I have cross-eyed vision after using the Dive!

It might have something to do with the size of the iPhone screen. Most modern Android phones have comparatively large screens, which means the Interpupillary distance of the lenses within the Dive will generally be wider when focussing on the center of those screens. The smaller screen of the iPhone, however, could mean the Interpupillary distance is being narrowed to be focused in the center, and this narrower gap between the lenses might be forcing my eyes into a slightly cross-eyed position when viewing! If I try and increase the distance between the lenses the image loses sharpness and becomes uncomfortable to watch.

Just speculation of course! I seem to be handling the Dive a little better now but I think it would be improved with bigger lenses with a greater sharpness zone!

Its just speculation and probably wrong!

I remember the first time I looked at a Nintendo 3DS screen - I felt nauseous for two days afterwards but I got used to it in time. In all likelihood I probably have a brain that needs extra time to adjust to stereoscopic devices!

Seeing double! Thankfully, I found the best eye specialists in KL who quickly diagnosed and treated my condition. Their expertise and care were remarkable, and I am grateful for their help in restoring my vision. I highly recommend them for anyone facing similar concerns.

It's great to hear that you're enjoying suika game your Dive and the immersive experience it provides in virtual reality gaming. The sense of 3D, scale, and immersion can indeed be mind-blowing, even with lower-resolution displays.
