Who Would Want the Life of a Rabbit?

If you own a rabbit you will already know that feeding them is not as straightforward as feeding a cat or dog. No single commercial pet food provides all the nutritional elements a rabbit needs in its daily diet [color=#0c7ed4][size=2][font="Open Sans", "Helvetica Neue", Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Can rabbits eat celery[/font][/size][/color], so you need to purchase multiple food types in order to keep your rabbit happy and healthy. Far from being an unnecessary treat, rabbit snacks can actually form an important part of your rabbit's diet and should be offered routinely in addition to plenty of hay and fibre filled nuggets.

If you consider a rabbits eating habits in the wild they will happily munch on grass, tree bark and twigs all day long. Domestic rabbits need this same, fibre filled diet for two reasons; 1. they need to ensure a healthy digestive system (hence the fibre, found in grass in the wild) and 2. they need to continuously gnaw to ensure their teeth do not become overgrown.

When offering your rabbit a snack or treat you can really get creative. Rabbits love to forage (again, just as they would do in the wild) and you can encourage foraging by hiding their treats in their hay. They will enjoy digging through the hay to seek out these tasty rewards. If you want to get really creative you can try hiding the treats in cardboard or paper. The rabbit can then spend play time searching and uncovering their snack - great for the emotional well-being of the animal.

When shopping for treats you should bear in mind that they need to be healthy. Don't go down the human route of thinking a treat means a sugary, unhealthy snack. Rabbit treats should be packed full of fibre and should include ingredients they would find in the wild. You can by delicious rabbit snacks made from natural ingredients such as wild grass, dandelion, dried apple, herbs and flowers.
