Print service?
by rainer on Jul 10th, 2013 21:26 PM
Hi everybody!
i really like the idea of this cool little device. Thanks a lot for this great project!
As i do not have access to a 3D printer or laser cutter, i wanted to ask if there are any commercial print services available (preferable in Germany) that can print the Dive at a reasonable price? Could anybody recommend such a service?
Alternatively, would somebody in this board be willing to print/cut me a set of parts ( of course i would be willing to pay for it )?
Thanks for any help/suggestion,
Rainerrainer

Hi,
in order to see which one of any service out there is the least costly, it would help if anyone could specify the amount of cm3 the model takes up. The services i find usually charge per volume, but the model is a bit difficult to assess just by looking at a picture.
Does anyone know the print volume required for the STL, Stefan perhaps?waaahsabi

According to a german computer magazine called C't the cheapest way is at Fabberhouse for around 80Euro. Most others charge 150Euro or more...
BUT: I wasn't willing to pay that much for a prototype so i just did this in 10 minutes. And for free:
Works pretty cool and everything is customizable
U can also use this with playwood:

Looks like this at the end and u dont need a 3D printer for the big parts:

Well, i for one started yesterday with designing my own frame specifically for my Xperia Z, so i can build in stuff like a USB cable connector and sound cable. The rough estimate for the print volume is around 100cm3, perhaps a bit less if i reduce things a bit...
Edit: The current design is at about 64 cm3 total, which would cost roughly 70 Eur here in the Netherlands...

Looks good, can you make the .STL files available?
I think it would be good to have a system that has hooks to use an elastic band to hold the phone at the four corners (like http://youtu.be/fuGS3kRWvcI )
That should be quick to release and give good support.sven

@ waaahsabi
Love your model design...
So that the picture is rendered you didn´t print the glasses so far, right?
I couldn´t see anything to mount/adjust the lenses. Do you have another solution?
I am working on a model for the galaxy nexus. Will upload some pictures when it is ready and maybe share the CAD files if Stefan Welker agrees.

Hi,
@Klausek you're absolutely correct. I haven't built/designed the lens mounts yet. I have yet to do a bit of research as to what gives the best adjustment capabilities vs being lightweight and not too complicated. The solution from Stefan is quite OK, but i was thinking that perhaps - with 3d printing - there could be something better.
I have .STL files of this particular design, but as there's no lens mount, it wouldn't make too much sense to use them. And for the same reason i haven't printed this design yet.
Unfortunately the lenses are currently out of stock on Amazon though, because i'd like to see what the whole thing looks like with optics (so far i'm holding my cellphone right in front of my eyes, and the impression is consequently a bit blurry). So i think there will be a bit of a delay with the lens mount :[waaahsabi

@waaahsabi: we have sent a new batch of lens kits to amazon, they will be available in the next few days.
