Phone live location

I recently found myself in a bit of a pickle during a solo backpacking trip. My phone battery died, and I lost track of my campsite in the wilderness. How do you all use GPS phone live location features to navigate and avoid getting lost in the great outdoors? Any tips for maximizing the benefits of this technology without draining your battery too quickly? I'd appreciate your advice!
