American Lens Kit Confirmed

American Lens Kit Confirmed

by cubedparadox on Aug 15th, 2013 00:08 AM

EDIT: See last post

Hello, I have just tried to purchase the lens kit, but amazon said that it was unavailable to ship to the united states. Is there a work around or some other way for me to acquire these lenses?
Thanks in advance!

Hi.

I'm building the kit posted by FractalBuddha (on this board) so I'm not using a 3d Printer. That said, I ordered two of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/5x-pocket-loupe ... 3a79987a19

They're in the mail now. I'll let you know how the work out.

Ok, cool. Thanks for the link, its just too bad it costs twice as much as the dive kit.
Also, I see those are 5x, does anyone know how powerful the dive's lenses are? If I knew the magnification, I might be able to find something that would work.

His kit is priced in Euro not Dollars.

Those are more expensive but only by about 30%.

Yes, but unless I miss-read that ebay post, it is only selling one lens for 12$, so I would have to buy two.

Nope, you read the post correctly.

Turns out I'm just a doofus;)

I can't recall where I read it but somebody had mentioned using the lenses from toy binoculars. Might be worth a trip to Goodwill or something?

This is where I found the suggestion for the e-bay lenses:

There might be other options in the comments.

So, I installed my lenses last night.

These are 2", aspherical 5x lenses.

So far my impression is that the 3d effect is really good (SBS 3d vids on youtube and roller coaster demo here). The downside is the FoV is low. It seems like I'm watching a large 3d screen. It's neat, but not immersive. I'm assuming this is a lense issue? I have good eyesight but I have to have these about 2" from the screen; this makes it very easy to see the side panels. Maybe rounder lenses would wrap the image more?

Anyone else have input?

I don't know what the magnification is on the opendive lenses, but the fov2go http://projects.ict.usc.edu/mxr/diy/fov2go/ vr display, which is very similar to the dive, uses 7x 1.5 inch lens, so it could be that those 5x ones aren't at a high enough magnification for the relatively small phone screen.
The fov2go also has a tablet version, which uses 5x lenses, so I'm thinking that's the problem.

*I just ordered the 7x lenses that fov2go uses, I'm hoping they will work out better than the 5x ones you ordered.

Did the lenses work? I was looking actually at bigger lenses on Amazon (search for 5cm focal length), but I am not sure, if I am only interested in the focal length or should also be in magnification.

Cheers,

Sorry about the delay, I've been busy with my 3d printer. Anyhow, I just put the model together and tested it with the rollercoaster demo, and it is great! I'm using this --> http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:93460 which is basically an improved opendive.
