OpenDive for more than gaming, help with lenses

by ulno on Sep 4th, 2013 05:23 AM

Hi OpenDive fans,

I have printed my Dive (extending the clamps to hold my phone including its case), got the lenses, and played a little bit with it -- nice! However, I envision using the Dive for more than gaming. I thought it would be also cool to use it as an e-reading, video (2d and 3d), and even super desktop (I would love to see my eclipse on a really big screen, which I can extend with moving my head) device.

However, I think the lenses are a little small for such use. I have found some affordable 38mm and 50mm in diameter 5cm focal length lenses on Amazon-US (not yet ordered). As I am not an optician, my knowledge about the related physics is just based on the stuff I find on the net. Anybody here who can confirm that 5cm focal length could work for getting the screen near enough to look at it non-blurry with relaxed eyes? My rough estimates of the lenses Stefan provides show something close to 5cm focal length.

Any ideas, hints, or support working into this directions?

Cheers,
ulno

Hi,
I am using my glasses predominantly for watching 2D TV Shows and not gaming so far.

Works best with one big Fresnel lens (120mm focal, cut to fit your glasses with sicers).
50mm is to close in my opinion.

I can get you some freslen foil lenses for 2usd each.

I think this is exactly what I was looking for. I will study the Fresnel lenses a bit and see (even with the fear of seeing pixels) if I can the whole case a little smaller and the FOV up. However, I am using also a phone with 1280 pixels, so I might end up with the same design as yours.
I will switch to your thread, when I have any results.

Thanks again,
