Watch Dogs 2 is not a lonely game
Watch Dogs 2 is not a lonely game

As in the first game, Watch Dogs 2 places you in the role of an underground vigilante, a hacker abusing security flaws in phones and computer systems in a quest to expose corporate corruption. And like the first game, Watch Dogs 2 collides headfirst with the same moral dilemmas faced by hackers in real life: Should you exploit a broken system just because you can? Who is it OK for you to go after? How far is too far?
Even if you’re murdering people to steal data, Watch Dogs 2’s loose take on pop culture hacktivism assumes a more bizarre, self-aware direction for the series overall. There’s a lot of goofy open world fun to have in Watch Dogs 2, mostly as a byproduct of the chaos your abilities enable, and especially by combining abilities in the free roam co-op mode. But its stealth systems are undermined by hacking and combat abilities that feel too unwieldy and passive to be reliable, and as slapstick as it can be, relying on the same powers throughout a thirty hour runtime turns Watch Dogs 2’s best abilities boring far too soon.
Shootouts ensue, using the same cover-based shooting that’s all but ubiquitous with open-world crime games. Watch Dogs 2 feels a little different than most because even on normal difficulty you’re not very durable, and the AI is reasonably good at using cover and aggressively flanking. (Also, a lot more of San Francisco gangs have hand grenades than I’d have thought.) But you have enough means of indirect attack to feel capable in a fight, and some of them are great fun. Explosive-carrying enemies can be hacked to detonate their bombs, some can be stunned by overloading their headset communications gear, and anyone who happens to be standing near a hackable piece of equipment in the environment can be shocked or blown up at the push of a button.
Watch Dogs 2 is not a lonely game. When he's not working alongside his teammates directly, Marcus is at least in constant communication with them. Whole hours of the game are given over to building out these characters, to the point where I didn't even realize I was starting to genuinely appreciate them. Characters like Sitara, a DJ and artist who provides DedSec's graphic design sensibilities, grew on me as naturally as a real-life group of new friends. Heck, I even learned to love Wrench, an initially cringe-worthy, loud-mouthed ball of energy who wears a Daft Punk-inspired face mask that flashes emoticons through its goggles.
Motorcycles feel great, on the other hand, offering both speed and easy handling. Exploring the map on a motorcycle--whether it’s searching for stunt ramps or to simply take in the sights--is a relaxing way to kill a few hours in Watch Dogs 2. Don't be surprised if you hop into the game just so you can ride a motorcycle down the Embarcadero at sunset or blow through the lush scenery of Golden Gate Park.
Watch Dogs 2’s version is super condensed, with entire neighborhoods left on the cutting room floor, but it has all the major landmarks pretty much where they should be. (Thankfully the perpetually gridlocked traffic was omitted.) It’s a fun and diverse place to explore and run amok, and it’s surreal to be in a car chase and suddenly look up and see something like Moscone Center, the Palace of Fine Arts, the Painted Ladies, Fisherman’s Wharf, or Stanford University. I’d recommend it as virtual tourism, especially if you’ve been here before and want a refresher.
