When hiking or exploring in the wilderness, a paper map may be a reliable means of navigation. Some helpful hints for navigating using a paper map are as follows.
1. Study the map: Before leaving, spend some time studying the map and learning the lay of the land. Try to find mountains, lakes, or rivers that might help you get your bearings.
2. Carry a compass: This navigational tool will aid in establishing and maintaining a straight track. Learn to use a compass properly before starting off.
3. protect the map from moisture by storing it in an airtight, waterproof container. A map printed on waterproof paper or laminated for outdoor usage is likewise acceptable.
Fourth, make use of the map's scale; on most paper maps, the distances shown are proportional to actual distances. Make use of the scale to make calculated distance and route decisions.
5. Make notes of where you've been and where you're going on the map. This will serve as a handy reminder of your current location and upcoming objectives.
6. Regularly check your position on the map to make sure you're still on the right track. Check out familiar landmarks or characteristics to verify your location.
7. Make sure you have a backup plan in case you become lost or bewildered. This can include having access to satellite navigation technology, having access to a secondary map, or understanding how to use celestial navigation.
Keep in mind that mastering the art of paper map and mapquest driving directions reading takes time and effort. Before venturing out into unfamiliar territory, it's a good idea to hone your navigational abilities in a controlled situation.

Could also add not to skimp on proper hiking gear(it goes a long way): personally I'm a huge fan of Viktos boots for hiking(high ones with ankle support).
