New Game (School Project): Halls of Fear

New Game (School Project): Halls of Fear

by JakobP on Mar 23rd, 2014 13:55 PM

Hi guys, I'm a 17 year old student from Austria working on a Project for my game development subject.
I am really interested in VR so I bought a Dive (could not afford a Oculus Devkit) and started developing in Unity.

I started working on the game a month ago and wanted to share the first demo build with you.
In the game you are in a dungeon and have to find all flying cubes to get to the next level, but be aware of the monsters
that are lurking in dark. They'll kill you instantly.

Please give it a try and tell me what you think of it/what i should change or make better.

Planned improvements:
[list:1irshwur]
[*:1irshwur]Better Enemy AI[/*:m:1irshwur]
[*:1irshwur]Better Level Meshes[/*:m:1irshwur]
[*:1irshwur]More sounds[/*:m:1irshwur]
[*:1irshwur]More levels (currently only one)[/*:m:1irshwur]
[*:1irshwur]Obstacles[/*:m:1irshwur]
[*:1irshwur]Doors[/*:m:1irshwur]
[*:1irshwur]Key Configurator[/*:m:1irshwur][/list:u:1irshwur]

Currently it only supports the Snakebyte controller but key configuration will be added.
Runs at constant 60 fps on my Nexus 5, haven't tested it on other phones.
But be aware of long loading times! (Can't load levels in background)

Most of the Assets are out of the Unity Asset Store and the sounds are from http://www.freesfx.co.uk
Thanks for your replies!

EDIT

New version Download: https://mega.co.nz/#!N9J0nYRI!kXYIZ6hNC ... SFeO-bFVxs
And you should use the gamepad mapping for the controller.

EDIT 2

Now on the Play Store: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... allsoffear

yeah, I'm extremely arachnophobic, so the entire time I was panicking that a spider was going to jump out and I would have a heart attack. I thought I was a bitch going into the caves in skyrim, but this was a whole new level of fear. when I finally stumbled onto the scorpion looking thing, let's just say I didn't know I could squeal like that. I'm not sure if there are any other monsters, but that was enough for me.

suggestions: maybe add some scary music/heartbeat/heavy breathing into the mix. the footsteps and monster noises were pretty creepy, but I think some more fear ambiance/music could put it over the top. I got to the 7th cube before I found the scorpion... I was beginning to think that there wasn't going to be any monsters. I'm not sure if there are any more or not, but I think adding in more things to scare the pants off someone would help out(just no spiders!!!) I have a nexus 5 and the game ran smoothly on my phone. I thought the game looked pretty good! the only other thing I would recommend is a map. I know dread halls for the rift has a map as you explore to help you from getting turned around so easily. I know there are some assets you can buy to help out with in game maps, but if they are too expensive/difficult to implement maybe you could just add some variety to the rooms, so you could get a sense of whether or not you'd been in the room before. (i.e. different tiled floor, bookshelf in one room, skeleton, etc.)

overall the main concept is perfect. I was creeped out as all hell! I thought the lighting was perfect... just enough to scare the crap out of me

hey,
nice little game. runs fine on my htc one x.
i agree with bbennet, some kind of scary music would be great for a more dangerous felling.
and please write in your discription that you are using keyboard mapping for the sb controller (saving time trying whats work).

some suggestions:
why do you not place the cubes wiht something more interesting to search for? maybe you can change them to 10 relics you have to find or something similar.
what do you think about adding a weapon for defence? it could be a torch wich gives you also the little light you have...

great work for now. want to see more!

First, thanks for all your feedback!

@bbennett22:
I added a bit of background music to the new build (Download below), but that won't be all. Dreadhalls was an inspiration for me, so I thought of a minimap but I don't want to spend money on an asset. I might add a map but I don't know how to make one, so it'll take a while to figure that out. But I'm definitly going to add some crates, barrels, bookshelf etc. this week, then it'll be easier to orientate yourself.

@jpslara:
The new build should fix your problem. I had a really big asset that somehow got added to the build and was loaded into the RAM.

@JayRay:
That the keyboard mode works was an accident. I mapped the keys for the nomal gamepad mode.
I used cubes because they were easy to make. I'm not a great modeller but I'll take a look at the Asset Store, maybe I find something.
Weapons won't be added because I want you to be defenseless against the monsters to feel more scared. I'll probably add a lantern when I have the time.

Ok, thank you. The new versión work fine now in my Galaxy S3, and it is gread.

One more think, I think that from time to time a message appear on screen, but not as a 3D imagen, but 2D, is it a possible mistake in the game?
I cuold not read the message, for this reason I don't write it here.

ah ok, but somehow only the keyboard mapping mode works with my snatkebyte controller. in the menu, going up and down works fine with all modi. by using of one of the simple game controller modi i could not use any button to press start.

Crap. That was scary! Great atmosphere. Very immersive. Though I could only find 6 cubes before the drift started making me dizzy. :)

Great work!
