Quake 2 Crashes

Quake 2 Crashes

by fluxa on Aug 18th, 2014 11:56 AM

Hi all,
I'm trying to play the modified (side by side) version of Quake 2 found here: https://www.durovis.com/apks/quake2androidudp.apk
I copied the pak0.pak file into the 'sdcard/base2q' folder as required. I had to do it manually because I'm getting the following error when doing it from the Tools menu:

"Error: java.util.zip.ZipException: Not a zip archive."

Anyway, after starting the game right after the loading view the app crashes with the error: "Unfortunately, Quake2 has stopped"
This doesn't happen with the unmodified 1.91 version from https://code.google.com/p/quake2android/.This one works just fine.

I also tried re-compiling from source with the Android SDK 4.4 without luck. (source: https://www.durovis.com/apks/quake2andr ... rce.tar.gz)

I'm running stock Android KitKat 4.4.4 on a Nexus5 device.

Please, if anyone had similar issues and figured it out. Thanks!

Go to the following lnk and install any of the zip files to your desktop. Extract the pak file and place it in the baseq2 folder on your android device. Use es file explorer or equivalent. That worked for me perfectly. http://www.filewatcher.com/m/q2-314-dem ... 499-0.html

Hi @karamoon, thanks for replying.
This is exactly what I did but no luck, app crashes right after the loading pops up.
The weird thing is that the un-modified Quake 2 v1.91 works fine and is using the same baseq2 folder in my device so that's not a problem.

Apologies, I did not read your post properly. Well, it's quite plausible that there could be an issue. I think it's highly unlikely that it is your hardware, especially so when it is running a stock ROM. I had a lot of trouble getting the first version to work from the download link in the 'tools' menu, ultimately I had to install manually using those links above. Much as you, I always got the 'zip error' If anything, I would suppose there are still bugs that are apparent on different devices. Perhaps somebody will shed better light.

Hey @karamoon, thanks again for replying. After a long trial-and-error session I finally figured it out. In some point when I got KitKat 4.4 I switched to the new runtime ART on the developer options menu. ART was introduce experimentally in 4.4 as is still work in progress, though I didn't have any major issues with it. Now I switched back to DALVIK and Quake 2 works perfectly. :)

Cool, I'd say it was always going to take some figuring out. It's always something small .... why the hec is that! Enjoy Q2, I need to get a dedicated controller for it. The one I have is a cheap USB one that's connected by OTG. I map the buttons within the control setup menu in Q2, but all I can do is assign forward/backstep and attack. I can't assign jump/change weapon etc. I wonder is there a way to map without buying a dedicated controller?

Hey! I'm using a PS3 controller connected via BT with the "Sixaxis Controller" app. I had the same problem at first, I could only map 2 buttons from the controller but after I disabled the option "Enable Gamepad" from the "Gamepad Settings" menu on the sixaxis controller app, I managed to map all the buttons properly. Playing Q2 like this is a lot fun!
Just out of curiosity, which VR headset are you using? I have the cardboard but I feel now getting something more confortable, looking at this as an option: http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?spm=a23 ... 780#detail
Cheers ;)

That's great info, thanks. I'll check this out later this evening. I just had a look at the headset you're looking at from the link. Well, it looks tidy and durable and the price is similar to the Dive. But, it looks like it's dedicated to either a certain type of phone or size of phone, it's not a universal design to accommodate the camera on a smart phone. My M8 wouldn't suit that unit. So I guess my argument here would be that it doesn't permit you to choose any type of smart phone to use with it. If it suits what you have, then go for it. The top head strap is a good idea too, that's the one thing I would lie to have on the Dive. All in all I still recommend the Dive unit, it's universal, it is inexpensive and the guy behind the idea has genuinely worked hard to get the project where it is. I tried cardboard a while back, that's when I knew I had to invest in something far better, I was expecting to have to pay a lot of money, but for the sake of €60 the Durovis Dive is an absolute bargain.
